Few individuals have supported Sahuaro and the Tucson community in as many ways as Dan Gaul—student, athlete, educator, coach, and businessman.
As a Cougar, Dan set school records in track and cross country across multiple events. He continued his athletic career at the University of Arizona, where he competed in both sports and helped set a school record in the two-mile relay. Even after his college years, Dan remained a fierce competitor, running at the Masters level and setting a record for the over-40 mile run.
Coaching came naturally to Dan. He started cross country programs at several middle schools and went on to coach at his alma mater, Sahuaro. Under his leadership, Cougar teams won 85% of their dual meets and qualified countless athletes for Region and State competitions. His passion for teaching matched his coaching success. Over the years, Dan taught Math, Physical Education, and even Dance at Maxwell, Mansfeld, and Sahuaro High Schools.
Beyond the classroom and track, Dan embraced another talent—country swing dancing. Known throughout Tucson as “Dancin’ Dan,” he taught more than 80,000 people how to country swing and was even featured on HBO and PM Magazine. His love of teaching and entertaining reached far beyond the school setting.
Dan also found success as an entrepreneur, founding Dandy Dan Printing, a silkscreening company that supplied shirts and sweats to teams across Arizona. True to his generous spirit, he frequently donated clothing to students and programs in need.
Family has always been at the center of Dan’s life. He and his wife, Debbie, raised three children—Joe, David, and Katie—all of whom excelled in track and cross country as Sahuaro students, continuing the Gaul family legacy.
Athlete, coach, teacher, dancer, and businessman, Dan Gaul has given back to his school and community in every chapter of his life. His accomplishments and his generosity make him a true Cougar Hall of Famer.
