1972 State Champion Sahuaro Cougars Wrestling Team

The 1972 Wrestling Team holds a special place in Sahuaro High School history as the school’s only State Championship wrestling team. Guided by the steady leadership of Coach Howard Breinig, the Cougars broke through years of Sunnyside dominance to capture the title.

Coach Breinig recognized early that this group had championship potential. He pushed the team with year-round running and weight training, instilling both discipline and confidence. Many of the athletes were multi-sport competitors, but it was on the wrestling mat where they came together, building a bond that set aside individual egos in pursuit of a common goal.

Their commitment was rewarded at the state tournament. Ed Torrejon, Paul Scoonover, and Chester Badget each claimed first place in their respective weight classes, while John Handshaw earned a third-place finish. Each champion acknowledged that their victories were possible only because of the daily battles in practice, driven by the support and competition of their teammates.

Rounding out the roster of this historic squad were John Beckwith, Steve Weinstein, Doug Brewington, Robbin Siva, Larry Hume, Roger Peterson, Tim Hume, and Dave Price. Together, they forged a culture of hard work, respect, and unity that carried them to the pinnacle of Arizona high school wrestling.

The 1972 Cougars forever set the standard of excellence, teamwork, and determination at Sahuaro. Their legacy lives on as the only wrestling team in school history to bring home a State Championship.
