The Sahuaro Cougar Foundation is proud to induct the 1994 State Championship Football Team into the Sahuaro Hall of Fame. Many of the players from the 1994 Football team talk about the importance of both their coach and team members in making a lifelong impact on them. In 1993 the Varsity Football team went deep into the State Play-offs. They knew there was a lot of talent on the team but felt like they could do more. Matt Louzensky, player from the class of 1994 states “our coaches pushed us the following year knowing what we had in us and making sure we knew how to work through the hard times , the pain and discomfort to make us the best we could be”.
In 1994 the team won 11 games, losing only once. When playing in the State Championship team Sahuaro was the underdog and the opponent was bigger and stronger. Sam Storrer had been Sahuaro’s quarterback for most of the season until he separated his shoulder. Junior Aaron Dumsch took over and helped Sahuaro win victories over Scottsdale Coronado, Phoenix Westview, and Glendale Cactus to get to the finals. The defense played an outstanding game, stopping a very strong offense by Peoria . The offense led by running back Omar Bacon, a blocked punt by Chris Spur, and some key play calling by Coach Howard Breinig helped Sahuaro complete their season.
Coach Breinig had coached the Sahuaro football team in three previous title games, but had never had a chance to hoist the championship trophy until this year. Coach Breinig said ” you always tell people that if you work hard and really believe in something, eventually good things will happen” And a very good thing happened in 1994 to Sahuaro Football. Thank you to Jacob Fieber for submitting this nomination. A well deserved award.
